El Rastro in Madrid

Planning a visit to Madrid? Then you simply can't miss El Rastro flea market, an iconic open-air market and one of the city's most popular tourist attractions.

El Rastro in Madrid is much more than just a street market – it's a chance to find that vintage piece of furniture you’ve been searching for or a unique accessory to take home as a souvenir. You’ll find all kinds of items here, from antiques and second-hand clothing to artwork, all in a truly authentic Madrid atmosphere. Read on for all the details!

History of El Rastro in Madrid

El Rastro is one of the oldest markets in the city, with origins dating back to the 18th century. According to historical records, it began around 1740 as a meeting point for the sale and exchange of second-hand clothing, serving as an alternative to itinerant trade.

The market was originally located near the River Manzanares, close to the city’s old slaughterhouse. This is where the name "El Rastro" comes from – as the animals were dragged from the slaughterhouse, they left a trail ("rastro") of blood behind. Over time, the market has retained its unique character and continues to be a cultural landmark for locals.

Where is El Rastro in Madrid?

El Rastro is located in the heart of Madrid, in the central Embajadores neighbourhood. This open-air market stretches across several streets, with its focal point at Plaza de Cascorro and Ribera de Curtidores street.

You’ll find up to 3,500 stalls that spread into the nearby Ronda de Toledo and Calle de Embajadores.

What are El Rastro’s opening hours?

El Rastro is held every Sunday and on public holidays throughout the year. It opens from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It’s a long-standing tradition in Madrid, with many locals visiting regularly.

During the rest of the week, Ribera de Curtidores street is home to many specialised shops, antique dealers, and second-hand bookshops.

What can you buy at El Rastro market?

At El Rastro, you’ll find an incredible variety of items for sale, it’s a treasure trove for lovers of vintage goods and rare finds.

From vintage furniture to quirky collectibles that will add character to any space, the market offers a wealth of options. The stalls are filled with antiques, second-hand clothing, old books, and electronic components. You’ll also come across plenty of one-of-a-kind accessories that you won’t find anywhere else. In short, El Rastro is a true paradise for bargain hunters and those looking for something a bit different.

Tips for visiting El Rastro

A stroll through El Rastro can feel overwhelming due to its size and the number of people it attracts each week. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your visit:

  • Try to arrive early. Arrive ideally when it opens at 9:00 a.m. to beat the crowds and get first pick of the items for sale.
  • Don’t forget to bring cash. Many vendors don’t accept card payments.
